The first morning of Sugar Mas is j'ouvert, which means leaving the house at four and walking into Basseterre beside several thousand people you half know. By dawn the streets carry powder, mud, paint, and the residue of a great deal of rum punch. The trucks keep rolling. The crowd keeps dancing. The federation has opened Christmas this way for fifty-four years.

The calendar fills from there. Calypso Monarch finals at Carnival City. The National Carnival Queen pageant. The grand parade on New Year's Day, which is the show visitors come for, though veterans will tell you it is the smaller of the parade days.

Food runs underneath all of it. Black cake on every table, sorrel in every glass, sugar cake and tamarind balls at the church bazaars, pork on a grill outside every house party.

This is not a tourist carnival. The diaspora flies in for it, and everyone who lives here already has nowhere else to be. For ten days the island simply becomes the festival.
