Rum ran from the ground above it by 1681, on land the Jeffeson family held. Both stopped: the sugar across the whole island in 2005, the rum here long before. The distillery lay buried most of the last century."}]}, {"type"=>"paragraph", "children"=>[{"type"=>"text", "value"=>"The Widdowsons bought Wingfield Estate in 1970. In 2010 Jack Widdowson and Ben Taylor started digging out the old footprint from a single red brick in the bush. The walls stand again now, with a bar called Alfie's built into the stone, named for the last head distiller to work the original still. This rum is distilled and aged in Barbados with Foursquare, then blended and bottled at Wingfield. A working still back on this ground is the next phase. After two centuries quiet, the oldest rum ground in the English Caribbean is coming back, and this is the bottle that broke the silence."}]}]}
How it tastes

Mahogany at the edge, deep amber in the middle. The nose opens on molasses and burnt sugar, then vanilla, nutmeg, dried banana, a low clove. It turns floral as it warms, orange blossom and hibiscus, with old leather and tobacco sitting underneath. The palate is mouth-coating and dry: brown butter, stewed plum, orange peel, almond, then guava and dried pineapple through the middle. The oak shows but does not run things. The finish is long and lightly spiced, nearer a sipping bourbon than most rums.
